Virtanen, V. 1999: Bryophyte flora of the Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea. LX. Bartramia, Conostomum and Leiomela (Bartramiaceae, Musci). — Acta Bot. Fennica 165: 1–15.

The family Bartramiaceae includes six genera in Western Melanesia: Bartramia Hedw., Breutelia (B.S.G.) Schimp., Conostomum Sw., Fleischerobryum Loeske, Leiomela (Mitt.) Broth., and Philonotis Brid. A key for Western Melanesian genera is given, with species descriptions and illustrations of Bartramia, Conostomum and Leiomela. Bartramia conica E. B. Bartram, B. halleriana Hedw., B. ithyphylla Brid., Conostomum pentastichum (Brid.) Lindb., and Leiomela bartramioides (Hook.) Paris occur in Western Melanesia. Leiomela africana Thér. & Naveau and Leiomela javanica (Renauld & Cardot) Broth. were synonymized with Leiomela bartramioides (Hook.) Paris. Conostomum pentastichum (Brid.) Lindb. was not considered conspecific with C. tetragonum (Hedw.) Lindb. The taxonomy, ecology and distribution of the species are discussed.

Hygrohypnum Lindb. (Amblystegiaceae, Musci) is a new generic addition to the moss flora of New Guinea, represented there by H. luridum (Hedw.) Jenn. Brachythecium integerrimum Bartr. is its taxonomic synonym. The species is described and illustrated.

Ignatov, M. S., Koponen, T. & Norris, D. H. 1999: Bryophyte flora of the Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea. LXII. Brachytheciaceae (Musci), excluding Homalothecium and Palamocladium. — Acta Bot. Fennica 165: 23–72.

Fifteen Western Melanesian species of the family Brachytheciaceae are treated, representing the genera Brachythecium B.S.G., Brachytheciella Ignatov, gen. nov., Unclejackia Ignatov, T. J. Kop. & D. H. Norris, gen. nov., Eurhynchium B.S.G., Platyhypnidium M. Fleisch., Rhynchostegiella (B.S.G.) Limpr., and Rhynchostegium B.S.G. Brachytheciella stolonifera Ignatov sp. nov., and Platyhypnidium muelleri (A. Jaeger) M. Fleisch. are the sole representatives of each of their genera. Brachythecium has B. koponenii Ignatov sp. nov., B. lamprocarpum (Müll. Hal.) A. Jaeger, B. papuense Ignatov, nom. nov., with var. papuense and var. ramosissimum Ignatov, var. nov., B. plumosum (Hedw.) B.S.G., and B. rutabulum (Hedw.) B.S.G. Eurhynchium has E. asperisetum (Müll. Hal.) E. B. Bartram, E. trichocladoides Ignatov sp. nov., and E. vagans (A. Jaeger) E. B. Bartram with two varieties, var. vagans and var. bergmanii (E. B. Bartram) Ignatov, comb. nov. Rhynchostegiella has R. brachypodia M. Fleisch., R. menadensis (Sande Lac.) E. B. Bartram, and R. papuensis E. B. Bartram, and Rhynchostegium has R. celebicum (Sande Lac.) A. Jaeger and R. javanicum (Bél.) Besch., and Unclejackia has U. longisetula (E. B. Bartram) Ignatov, T. J. Kop. & D. H. Norris, comb. nov. and U. crispifolia (E. B. Bartram) Ignatov, T. J. Kop. & D. H. Norris, comb. nov. Brachythecium integerrimum E. B. Bartram is excluded from the Brachytheciaceae. Nine names are reduced to synonyms, and six lectotypes and one neotype are selected (indexed). Eurhynchiella zeyheri (Müll. Hal.) M. Fleisch. is selected as the type of the genus Eurhynchiella M. Fleisch. Brachythecium lamprocarpum, B. rutabulum, and Eurhynchium asperisetum are for the first time recorded for Western Melanesia and Papua New Guinea, Brachythecium papuense for the Philippines, Platyhypnidium muelleri for Australia, and Rhynchostegium celebicum for New Caledonia. Keys to Western Melanesian Brachytheciaceae and to species of genera containing more than one species are given with the descriptions and illustrations of the species. Distributions in Western Melanesia are given along with the total range. The work includes taxonomic and nomenclatural discussions.

Ignatov, M. S. 1999: Bryophyte flora of the Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea. LXIII. On the pseudoparaphyllia in Brachytheciaceae and Meteoriaceae (Musci). — Acta Bot. Fennica 165: 73–83.

Pseudoparaphyllia in the moss families Brachytheciaceae and Meteoriaceae have been found to be very stable in respect to their arrangement around branch initials. The first pseudoparaphyllium is inserted distal to the initial and it has its apex directed toward the base of the stem, and the second and the third appear at about 120deg. to the first one. Investigations of this pattern in 30 other families of pleurocarpous mosses show that the Brachytheciaceae-Meteoriaceae pattern is unique. The exclusion from the Brachytheciaceae of Conardia H. Rob., Tomentypnum Loeske and Isothecium Brid. is confirmed. The inclusion in the Brachytheciaceae of Rozea Besch., Sciuroleskea Hampe ex Broth., Stenocarpidiopsis M. Fleisch. ex Broth., Catagoniopsis Broth., and Lepyrodontopsis Broth. is not confirmed. The inclusion of Trachypus Reinw. & Hornsch. within the Meteoriaceae is similarly not confirmed.

Pócs, T. & Piippo, S. 1999: Bryophyte flora of the Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea. LXIV. Aphanolejeunea (Lejeuneaceae, Hepaticae). — Acta Bot. Fennica 165: 85–102.

Nine species of Aphanolejeunea are reported for Western Melanesia (West Irian, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands), of which eight occur on the Huon Peninsula: A. amphibola (B. M. Thiers) Pócs & Bernecker, comb. nov., A. angustiloba Horik., A. borneensis (Herzog) Pócs, A. grossepapillosa Horik., A. koponenii Pócs, A. morobensis Pócs, A. norrisii Pócs, A. truncatifolia Horik., and A. veillonii (Tixier) Pócs. A. koponenii and A. norrisii are described as new, and A. amphibola, A. truncatifolia, and A. veillonii are new to Western Melanesia. A. morobensis and A. norrisii are endemic to Western Melanesia, A. truncatifolia is Pantropical, and A. grossepapillosa and A. veillonii are fairly widespread in SE Asia and in Indomalesia and Oceania, respectively. The other species, as far as known, are restricted to small areas in Australasia, SE Asia or Indomalesia. The characters typical of the genus, marginal and perpendicular gemmae, and Aphanolejeunea type branching were successfully used to delimitate the genus in SE Asia. Eight species are illustrated and altitudinal distributions for three species on the Huon Peninsula are presented.
