Koponen, T & Norris, D. H. 1996: Bryophyte flora of the Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea. LVII. Fleischerobryum and Philonotis (Bartramiaceae, Musci). — Acta Bot. Fennica 156: 1–21.

The family Bartramiaceae has six genera, Bartramia Hedw., Breutelia (Bruch & Schimp.) Schimp., Conostomum Sw., Fleischerobryum Loeske, Leiomela (Mitt.) Broth. and Philonotis Brid. in Western Melanesia. Fleischerobryum longicolle (Hampe) Loeske is for the first time recorded for Western Melanesia. The genus Fleischerobryum is revised worldwide to have only two species, F. longicolle and F. macrophyllum Broth. Six species of Philonotis are dealt with in this paper. They are P. calomicra Broth., P. hastata (Duby) Wijk & Marg., P. mollis (Dozy & Molk.) Mitt., P. runcinata C. Müll. ex Aongstroem, P. thwaitesii Mitt. and P. vescoana (Besch.) Par. Seventeen names are reduced as synonyms and 10 lectotypes are selected (indexed). Philonotis calomicra is for the first time recorded for the Philippines and Samoa, P. runcinata for Fiji, Philippines, New Caledonia, Sabah and Western Melanesia, P. thwaitesii for Tonga and P. vescoana for Fiji, Western Melanesia and Vanuatu. Key to Western Melanesian Philonotis is given with the descriptions and illustrations of the species. Distributions in Western Melanesia are given along with the total range. The work includes taxonomic and nomenclatural discussions.

Norris, D. H. & Koponen, T. 1996: Bryophyte flora of the Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea. LVIII. Hypnodendron (Hypnodendraceae, Musci). — Acta Bot. Fennica 156: 23–48.

In Western Melanesia the family Hypnodendraceae Broth. has 11 species in Hypnodendron (C. Müll.) Mitt.: H. auricomum Broth. & Geh., H. brevipes Broth., H. dendroides (Brid.) Touw, H. diversifolium Broth. & Geh., H. fuscomucronatum (C. Müll.) Jaeg., H. junghuhnii (C. Müll.) Jaeg., H. menziesii (Hook.) Par., H. milnei Mitt., H. reinwardtii (Schwaegr.) Jaeg., H. subspininervium (C. Müll.) Jaeg. and H. vitiense Mitt. The placement of the macronematal apparatus is shown to be an effective diagnostic feature for Hypnodendron, section Phoenicobryum (Lindb. ex Broth.) Touw. The cross-sectional anatomy of the sporangial wall is shown as a feature distinguishing Hypnodendron section Sciadocladus (Kindb.) Touw from all other members of the genus. The lectotypes of H. auricomum, H. brevipes, H. diversifolium, and H. macgregorii Broth. & Geh. are newly designated. The paper includes keys to the species, descriptions, illustrations and distributional data for the species in Western Melanesia. For each species there are discussions on taxonomy and classification, as well as nomenclatural notes and range descriptions.

Virtanen, V. 1996: Bryophyte flora of the Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea. LIX. Breutelia (Bartramiaceae, Musci). — Acta Bot. Fennica 156: 49–62.

The genus Breutelia (B. S. G.) Schimp. includes 6 species in Western Melanesia: B. arundinifolia (Duby) Fleisch., B. crassicaulis (C. Müll.) Par., B. aristifolia Zanten, B. longicapsularis Dix., B. roemeri Fleisch., and B. papuensis Virtanen, which is described as a new species. All except B. arundinifolia and B. crassicaulis are endemic to New Guinea. A key to Western Melanesian species is given, with species descriptions and illustrations. The taxonomy, ecology and distribution of the species are discussed.
